Most student pilots, and plenty of qualified ones, will at some point look out of the cockpit window and wonder what exactly is keeping the aircraft in the air. It is a genuinely fascinating question, and one that does not have a simple answer even after working through the textbooks that form part of the Private Pilot's Licence (PPL) syllabus. Understanding how an aircraft flies and how its systems work is not just an academic exercise. It directly affects how safely and confidently you operate in the air.
Principles of Flight
The principles of flight cover the science behind how an aircraft gets airborne, stays airborne, and is controlled throughout a flight. You do not need to be a mathematician to get to grips with this subject, though there is plenty of depth available for those who want it. Even a basic understanding will change the way you handle the controls, because you will be able to visualise what is actually happening to the aircraft at any given moment.
As part of the PPL syllabus you will sit a dedicated Principles of Flight theory exam, one of nine written papers required by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The exam tests your knowledge of the fundamental forces acting on the aircraft during flight:
- Lift, generated primarily by the wings
- Weight (or mass), acting downward through the centre of gravity
- Thrust, produced by the engine and propeller
- Drag, the resistance the aircraft experiences moving through the air
Beyond these four forces, the syllabus covers a wide range of topics including the aerofoil shape of a wing, angle of attack, the effects of flap, stability, and control surfaces. Practical subjects such as stalling and spinning are included too. Your instructor will demonstrate these manoeuvres in the air, and having already studied the theory means you will understand what is happening and respond correctly rather than being caught off guard. Stall recovery in particular is a core skill, and the theory behind it makes the exercise far less alarming when you experience it for the first time.
The PPL requires a minimum of 45 hours of total flight time, of which at least 25 hours must be dual instruction and 10 hours must be supervised solo. The nine CAA theory exams must all be passed before you sit your skills test. Theory exam fees typically run to around £30 to £50 per paper through an approved test centre, and revision materials from providers such as AFE or Pooleys cost roughly £100 to £200 for a full set.

Aircraft General Knowledge is another of the nine PPL theory exams, and arguably one of the most practically important. It covers the systems found in a modern light aircraft, how they function, how to identify faults, and what action to take when something goes wrong. You will apply this knowledge every single time you fly, from your pre-flight walkaround to managing an unexpected failure in the circuit.
The main subject areas include:
- Electrical systems and circuit protection
- Avionics and radio equipment
- Airframe and control systems
- Hydraulic systems
- Piston engines and fuel systems
- Propeller types and operation
- Flight instruments, including pitot-static and gyroscopic systems
Knowing this material well means you can carry out a thorough pre-flight inspection with genuine understanding, rather than simply going through the motions. Always use the aircraft checklist rather than relying on memory. Checklists exist precisely because even experienced pilots miss items when working from habit alone, and a missed check can have serious consequences.
During training your instructor will also introduce you to simulated system failures, including magneto checks, Direction Indicator (DI) drift, radio failure procedures, and a blocked pitot tube. Choosing the Right Licence Pathway
Before committing to the full PPL, it is worth knowing that the UK CAA also issues the Light Aircraft Pilot's Licence (LAPL), which requires a minimum of 30 hours total flight time and has a simpler LAPL medical standard. The LAPL allows you to fly single-engine piston aircraft within the UK and across much of Europe, carrying up to three passengers, though with more restrictions than a full PPL. Both licences require passing theory exams, and the Aircraft General Knowledge and Principles of Flight papers are common to both pathways.
The knowledge you build through these two subjects underpins everything that follows, whether you stop at the LAPL, go on to the PPL, or eventually pursue a Commercial Pilot's Licence (CPL) or beyond. Treat them as genuinely useful rather than as hurdles to clear and forget, and they will serve you throughout your flying career.
